Youssouf recalled in a statement that this historic day is a proud testament to the unity, resilience, and determination of the Somali people, who united on July 1, 1960, in pursuit of sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.
The AUC chairperson stated that the path taken since then has been characterized by courage, perseverance, and a commitment to building a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous country.
He said, “As you commemorate this important milestone, I pay tribute to the generations of Somalis whose sacrifices made this day possible. I reaffirm the African Union’s continued solidarity with Somalia as they continue to advance their national priorities.”
May this Independence Day renew the spirit of unity of the people of Mogadishu and inspire a new generation to continue the legacy of those whose vision and courage guaranteed independence, Youssouf underscored.
Independence Day is a national holiday commemorating the unification of the territories of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland on July 1, 1960.
