The first round is taking place until 17:00 hours (local time) this Sunday. If a second round is necessary, the date set is July 20.
Four candidates, Edinho Silva, Romenio Pereira, Rui Falcao, and Valter Pomar, are vying for the position.
The candidates warned, in a debate last month, of the need for changes in the Government’s leadership to avoid defeat in the 2026 elections, as the new leader will lead the PT in next year’s presidential elections.
Falcao declared that the party is “on the eve of a decisive battle: the 2026 elections” and noted, “One of us will collectively lead our preparation for the battle for reelecting President Lula (da Silva).”
Since its founding, the PT has championed the Democratic Socialism coalition. The growing polarization in Brazil now requires it to make an effort to recover spaces for dialogue and consensus.
