Fuel shortage exacerbates health crisis in Gaza

Ramallah, July 6 (Prensa Latina) The fuel shortage in Gaza Strip, as a result of the Israeli blockade, threatens to cause a total collapse of the territory's health system today, medical sources warned.

Gaza Ministry of Health warned in a statement that the crisis “is exacerbating the severe exhaustion of the health system and the hospitals that remain operational.”

The growing pressure from the high number of critical injuries increases the need to ensure the continuous operation of generators to supply vital departments in those facilities, it noted. The statement accused Israel of deliberately imposing a policy of rationing diesel supplies.

Continuing with temporary and emergency solutions means waiting for vital departments to cease operations, it stressed.

Amjad Shawa, head of the Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations Network, expressed a similar view, stating that vital sectors in the Strip are threatened with total collapse as a result of the worsening crisis.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) also denounced the problem, stating on social media that without fuel and medical supplies, more services will be closed and more lives will be lost.

The WHO revealed that there are only minimal fuel reserves in northern and southern Gaza, barely enough to keep 17 hospitals partially functional for a short period of time.
