West Bank: Israeli settlements grows under Netanyahu’s government

Tel Aviv, July 6 (Prensa Latina) The number of Israeli settlements in the West Bank has increased from 128 to 178 since the right-wing alliance led by Benjamin Netanyahu came to power at the end of 2022, Channel 12 reported.

That news outlet explained that, in addition to the creation of dozens of new settlements, existing ones in the occupied Palestinian territory have also been expanded.

During the last two and a half years, the construction of more than 41,700 homes for Israelis in the West Bank has been approved, a figure higher than that recorded in the six years prior to the current government, Channel 12 stressed.

It also revealed that the number of so-called outposts, not recognized by the authorities, reached 214 by the end of 2024; constructions that are the seeds of future Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

All of them are considered illegal by the international community and several United Nations Security Council resolutions, but Palestinian authorities distinguish between those that are approved and those that are not.

The Channel 12 report was published days after the release of a letter signed by 14 ministers and the speaker of the Knesset (parliament) calling on Netanyahu to annex the West Bank.

The letter was harshly criticized by Palestinian authorities, who denounced the neighboring country’s expansionist plans.

According to official data, more than 750,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, despite international demands, which consider the territory part of the future Palestinian state.
