WFP warns of famine in Gaza due to Israeli blockade

Ramallah, July 7 (Prensa Latina) Hunger is spreading in the Gaza Strip as a result of the blockade imposed by Israel for months, a UN agency denounced.

In a statement released here, the World Food Program (WFP) warned that some 90,000 children and women are in urgent need of treatment in the coastal enclave, home to more than two million people.

The organization warned of “deteriorating security, limited access, and the growing desperation of communities in need of food assistance.”

The WFP highlighted that more than 700,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes in the Strip after the resumption of the Israeli military offensive on March 18.

“Now, 85% of Gaza is considered an active militarized zone,” the agency criticized.

“Despite our efforts, the food delivered to date represents a small fraction of the needs there,” it emphasized. The agency stated that it is ready to expand food assistance to Gaza if a ceasefire goes into effect.

We have experience with teams on the ground and have proven systems for responding on a large scale, it emphasized.
