Uruguay: Government concerned with violence about soccer

Montevideo, July 8 (Prensa Latina) Violence in Uruguayan soccer is raising concerns among the government, the opposition, and police forces today, following the incidents during the match between the teams Nacional and Penarol last Sunday.

Interior Minister Carlos Negro called several meetings today and tomorrow to analyze the security operation inside and outside the Centenario Stadium.

But above all, to monitor the progress of the investigation into the throwing of a water-based flare that seriously injured a police officer, who remains in intensive care after having his testicle removed.

Negro will meet with authorities from the Investigations and Cybercrime Directorates, the Unified Command Center, and with the Director of Sports Security, Juan Silva, the official responsible for the operation for the derby between the Uruguayan football archrivals.

Tomorrow, the minister will meet with representatives of the Uruguayan Football Association and the presidents of Nacional and Peñarol squads, Ricardo Vairo and Ignacio Ruglio.

Earlier, the Interior Minister said that the police operation “was carried out perfectly,” except for the attacks on two police officers who were injured.

His comments drew criticism from the opposition, which summoned him to appear before Parliament.
