Guatemala’s tourism: No significant damage after swarm of tremors

Guatemala City, July 9 (Prensa Latina) The Guatemalan Tourism Institute ruled out reports of significant damage to tourism sites or incidents involving domestic or foreign visitors following the recent earthquakes.

In a statement, the agency emphasized that the road network and airports are operating normally, ensuring the continuity of travel and activities in this sector (with growth prospects this year).

The Department of Tourism Assistance conducted assessment tours of the main tourist destinations and confirmed safe conditions for travelers, it emphasized.

It reported damage to homes and landslides in the departments of Sacatepequez, Escuintla, and Guatemala City, which are being addressed by the country’s authorities.

The largest hit municipality is Santa Maria de Jesus, in the department of Sacatepequez, with impacts on church structures, access to that area, and the tourist trail leading up to the Agua Volcano, the entity reported.

It was also said that this area is now restricted as a preventative measure, while describing nine landslides identified on the access route from San Juan del Obispo, also in Sacatepequez, and five more on the connecting route from Palin, Escuintla.

In the city of Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepequez, the partial collapse of a wall of the Handicraft Market was recorded, according to the text.

As a preventive measure, it was recommended that travelers refrain from climbing Agua, Pacaya, and Acatenango volcanoes and follow the instructions issued by the competent authorities at all times.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction declared an orange alert after the report of more than 150 earthquakes early this morning since the first one the day before.
