Palestinian doctor denounces collapse of health system in Gaza

Ramallah, July 10 (Prensa Latina) Gaza's hospital system is currently operating at 15 to 20% of its capacity due to the lack of fuel and the destruction caused by the Israeli aggression, a source in the sector reported.

Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, director of Field Hospitals for the Ministry of Health in the territory, warned of the total collapse of the system after the diesel needed to operate the generators has run out.

“We are experiencing a true tragedy,” the doctor told the Shehab news agency. “If the fuel does not arrive immediately, we will lose hundreds of patients in intensive care units because they are completely dependent on ventilators and electricity to survive,” he warned.

Al-Hams described the situation in those facilities as unimaginable and revealed that “medical staff are drowning in the stench of blood and sweat due to the large number of wounded arriving at the Nasser (medical) complex.”

Most departments there operate in the dark or with poor lighting, amid strict electricity rationing measures to maintain minimum operation capacity in operating rooms, anesthesia units, and intensive care units, he explained.

“The (Israeli) occupation knows that the fuel entering Gaza is completely depleted,” the doctor stated, after accusing the army of preventing the World Health Organization from accessing a million-liter reserve.

If the electricity is cut off, lives will be lost and we will face an unprecedented health massacre, he emphasized.

The specialist affirmed that the crisis is not limited only to hospitals, because the water and sanitation sector is also on the verge of collapse.
