Syria intensifies efforts to extinguish forest fires

Damascus, July 10 (Prensa Latina) Firefighters in Syria continue, for the eighth consecutive day, extinguishing the forest fires affecting the northwestern province of Latakia, significantly reducing the number of active fires.

Minister of Emergencies and Disaster Management Raed Al-Saleh reported that Civil Defense brigades have managed to almost completely control the fires, except for two active fires in hard-to-reach areas in the mountainous region of Jabal Turkmen.

According to the minister, there is ongoing coordination with several countries, including European nations and Iraq, to strengthen aerial intervention.

He clarified that Türkiye was the first country to respond, sending 12 tanker aircraft, specialized vehicles, and ground support units.

Teams from Jordan and Lebanon are also collaborating, with aerial support provided by the Syrian Ministry of Defense.

Al-Saleh lamented that some members of the Civil Defense suffered serious injuries after being trapped by the flames during the extinguishing efforts.

However, the remaining teams—composed of forestry brigades, firefighters, civil defense personnel, and international support—continue to work with commitment and preparedness.

In turn, Agriculture Minister Amjad Badr reported that the fires have affected approximately 15,000 hectares of forests and agricultural land.

He did not rule out the possibility that the fires could have been started intentionally, although he emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to confirm this hypothesis.

He also indicated that the relevant authorities have begun closing the affected area and access roads to facilitate the investigation and determine the precise causes of the fire.
