Guatemala responds to 294 emergencies due to seismic sequence

Guatemala City, July 14 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala's National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction has responded to 294 emergencies resulting from the sequence of more than 900 earthquakes recorded since last Tuesday.

In a press conference, the executive secretary of that entity, Claudinne Ogaldes, explained that the actions were focused on the municipalities of Santa Maria de Jesus, Sacatepequez department, San Vicente Pacaya and Palin, Escuintla, and Amatitlan.

From the seat of government, Ogaldes reported that 10,712 people were affected: 2,076 were homeless, 4,606 were evacuated, and 1,235 were sheltered.

She explained that in La Ronda housing assessments were done with the support of the Army and the Ministry of Education.

Among the largest hit infrastructure are health services, water services, roads, and several public buildings, especially schools, the official explained.

She mentioned the rehabilitation of power services, specifically in Santa Maria de Jesus, and the removal of four landslides on the highway to San Vicente Pacaya by the Ministry of Defense.

Ogaldes highlighted the security provided by that agency in shelters, the support for the construction of infrastructure and housing, as well as the established airlift.

She emphasized that the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure, and Housing removed landslides on seven roads, and the Guatemalan Red Cross, among others, provided pre-hospital care.
