Last Friday, some teacher groups signed an agreement with the Minister of Education, Lucy Molinar, which ended the strike and established the return of teachers to the classroom without retaliation, according to the document.
According to an official report, 21 groups signed the agreement, but about four indicated that they must first consult with their constituents.
Among these groups, the Panamanian Teachers Association and the Veraguas Teachers’ Association stand out, demanding the repeal or changes to the law, an issue that was not even discussed in those talks.
As it was reported by Prensa Latina, Representatives from the National Union of Education Workers and the Association of Educators of the Republic of Panama did not signed the text.
This document entails the commitment of educators to return to their schools and resume normal classes for the third quarter, which have been interrupted by protests in the public sector since April 23.
Representatives of the unions, Jorge Herrera, president of the National Assembly (Parliament), and Gabriel Diez, head of the National Council of Private Enterprise, were present at the meeting to reach this agreement.
