Hungary demands sanctions against Ukraine for citizen’s death

Budapest, July 15 (Prensa Latina) The Hungarian government demanded that the European Union punish Ukrainian officials for the death of citizen József Sebestyén during a forced military recruitment, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced.

The victim, a forty-five-year-old resident of the Transcarpathian region, died on July 6 after being detained by Ukrainian security forces, while his family reported that he suffered serious injuries during the procedure.

A state that allows these practices does not deserve to join the EU. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó will bring the case before the European Council this week, Orbán wrote on the social network X.

Ukrainian authorities credited the death to a pulmonary embolism and denied ill-treatment.

Kiev Ministry of Defense insists on complying with international protocols in recruitment.

Analysts from the European Center for Minority Issues point out that the incident reflects the discriminatory treatment of Hungarian minorities in Ukraine, with at least 12 similar cases this year.

Hungary maintains tensions with Kiev over the situation of the 150,000 ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia.

Last June, Budapest vetoed European military funds for Ukraine.

The European Commission has not commented on the sanctions request, while political observers anticipate that the bloc will avoid measures that would undermine its support for Kiev.
