This feature-length fiction film won the Lucia Award for Best Fiction at the 19th Gibara International Festival of Low-Fairness Cinema and the Best First Feature Award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) 2024.
Set in the 1980s, its story narrates the events experienced by Vilma, a young nurse from a rural town in the province of Villa Clara, determined to escape her precarious circumstances. Married to a man convalescing from an arm injury, this woman tries her hand at shooting in an attempt to find a way out for herself and her unborn child.
An atmospheric event drags Vilma (at times transformed into an underdeveloped nurse Dorothy) to a strange place where her dreams seem within reach.
The cast includes actress Andrea Doimeadios, who plays the character of Vilma, and the rest of the cast includes Reinier Diaz Vega, Armando Miguel Gomez, Osvaldo Doimeadios, Mario Guerra, Eman Xor Ona, Maikel Amelia Reyes, and Lola Amores.
With “Fenomenos naturales,” Diaz expands on the universe outlined in her short film of the same name, which premiered in 2016 during the Young Movie Festival of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC). The film is a production of Marinca Filmes, Gema Films, and Petit Film, with Vedado Films and Cinevinay also participating as associate producers.
