Ecuadorian opposition denounces attempt to buy legislators

Quito, July 17 (Prensa Latina) Former presidential candidate and leader of the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, Luisa González, denounced that the Ecuadorian government is attempting to buy legislators from her party to weaken them as an opposition.

“These practices, which are the worst of the country’s party system, are what cause many assembly members to sell out their principles and go to another side,” González revealed in an interview this Thursday with Ecuavisa channel.

After six members of the RC left the parliamentary group, the former candidate asserted that “there is no crisis” in the organization, “it is not bleeding out.”

In her opinion, the ruling party and the media are the ones constructing a narrative that there are fractures within the RC.

However, she did not rule out the possibility of more legislators leaving that political party in the future.

“To those who have left the RC, our best wishes, but they are not leaving us, but rather the people who elected them for a project,” she declared.

Despite the losses, González reiterated that they will continue “building a project for the Homeland.”

Since the current National Assembly was installed last May, Mónica Salazar, Sergio Peña, David Arias, Santiago Díaz, Jhajaira Urresta, and Carlos Vergas have left the RC bloc for various reasons.

Although some claim to be “independent,” in practice they have voted in line with the ruling National Democratic Action (ADN) movement.

The RC, founded by former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017), had 67 assembly members, and currently 61 remain in that political party.
