Hunger and disease spread across Gaza, UN denounces

Ramala, July 17 (Prensa Latina) The UN agency responsible for aiding Palestinians reported that hundreds of thousands of people are hungry and sick in Gaza Strip as a result of the Israeli aggression.

The situation is deteriorating dramatically and unprecedentedly, warned Adnan Abu Hasna, media advisor for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In an interview with the Shebah news agency, the official referred to the sharp increase in disease rates due to malnutrition and contaminated water; thus today the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a post-disaster stage, estimated the UNRWA spokesperson.

Abu Hasna welcomed the European Union’s announcements of an agreement with Israel to allow international organizations to resume their operations in the Strip.

We hope this commitment will translate into action on the ground, with hundreds of trucks carrying food and medical aid entering Gaza daily, as well as the equipment needed to repair the water desalination plants, he stressed.

Abu Hasna noted that only 11,000 tons of aid have entered the territory since May 17, an amount that could be delivered in a single day.

Hasna said “We’re working within the UN system to pressure that country and force it to reopen the border crossings and thus increase the amount of humanitarian supplies, and criticized the mechanism created by Israel and the United States to distribute food in Gaza.

That plan is “a resounding failure in addressing the worsening famine” due to the lack of experience, information, and logistical capacity, he stated.
