Cuba: Camaguey boosts key actions for its economy (+Photos)

Havana, July 18 (Prensa Latina) Camaguey is focused on implementing several actions to boost its economy and correct distortions, in tune with the government program, explained Governor Jorge Enrique Sutil, in his accountability report on the province's management before the deputies of the National Assembly of People's Power (parliament).

Camaguey, which is also working to comply with the economic and social policy guidelines of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Revolution, as well as to improve the work of the bodies of the People’s Power system, is moving toward reducing the teenage pregnancy rate, improving teacher coverage in its education system, fulfilling the housing program, and increasing the budget for science and innovation in the business sector.

The governor specified that Camaguey met the reported budget for 2024, while also achieving a budget deficit reduction of 1.45 billion 373 thousand 095 pesos.

Sutil informed the productive front, it was detailed that the cold-weather planting campaign for various crops was overfulfilled, with a total of 28,866.15 hectares planted, out of a planned 27,918 hectares.

The planned milk delivery to the industry is at 89 percent, with 1,371,200 liters less, still insufficient to cover the province’s demand. The governor also explained that operations were planned for three companies in the province during the sugar harvest. The report presented details that the Maternal and Child Program closed 2024 with an infant mortality rate of 7.5 per thousand live births and that four maternal deaths were reported. For the population over 60 years of age, there are 15 nursing homes and 27 senior citizen homes.

In Camaguey, 14,524 nursing homes are protected, with a total of 22,382 beneficiaries receiving financial benefits, services, and resources.

Teacher coverage in the province is at 72.3 percent, and the deficit is being covered with alternatives. Salary measures have benefited 17,258 workers for a total of 510 million pesos.

According to the governor, the population’s main complaints are related to electricity service, water supply, banking access, liquefied gas sales, obstructions, solid waste collection, distribution of the standard basic food basket, medical expenses, housing, and fuel sales to individuals.
