Cuba gives green light to Sports System Law

La Habana, 18 jul (Prensa Latina) The National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (ANPP, parliament) today approved the preliminary draft of the Law of the Cuban Sports System, which broadens access, promotion, and development of that activity in various fields.

With the presence of President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the deputies approved the first legal norm that strengthens the conception and execution of Physical Education and Sport for all, and guarantees the full inclusion of people with disabilities.

The president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (Inder), Osvaldo Vento, highlighted the extensive consultation process to which the draft law was subjected among state institutions, universities, and research centers.

The standard considered the experiences of 11 countries that have similar legal instruments, and was submitted to the criteria of the population, athletes, experts, and members of Parliament, with a large part of the proposals made being accepted, he emphasized.

The instrument recognizes the special conditions of national sport and defines prioritized sports; it rescues the ESPA (Higher Schools for the Improvement of Athletes), in their national and provincial structures, and institutionalizes sports academies at the territorial level.

It also includes specific provisions for communication and sponsorship; while also providing a higher level for the design, construction, operation, management, use, maintenance, and conservation of the heritage values of sports facilities and areas.

According to Vento, the Law promotes and rescues the best experiences of the island’s sports system, and is inspired by the thought and dedication of the historical leader Fidel Castro, considered the “Greatest Athlete,” stated the president of Inder.
