The president recalls that on April 12, 1980, Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz, in a statement entitled “Unity Now or Defeat Tomorrow,” called on all left-wing and people’s parties, regardless of their level of representation, to build a unified tactical and strategic project.
He meant that the current political situation is very different from that of that time, as a coup d’etat led by Luis Garcia Meza ended the democratic process, banned political parties and unions, and detained, tortured, and murdered dozens of Bolivians.
He added that “now the threats to all the progress made by our Democratic and Cultural Revolution are real and significant.
The internal war within the progressive and leftist forces is irrelevant to the people and offers no political lesson,” therefore, he urged “to get rid of that individualism that has spread through our ranks, to act with historical responsibility, listening to the mass, in order to make a leap forward in the Process of Change.”
The president adds that this is why “before it’s too late: unity now or defeat tomorrow.” I reiterate my call to progressive and left-wing parties, whether or not they have legal status, to social movements and unions, large and small, rural and urban, and to all working people to move in this direction (…).”
He emphasizes that this strategy has been victorious, as the combination of social and political struggle has allowed us to inaugurate a Process of Change in which, for the first time, the exploited and oppressed classes became the government.
