Brazil: Former Justice Ministers decry US revocation of judges’ visas

Brasilia, July 22 (Prensa Latina) Former Brazilian Justice Ministers condemned US President Donald Trump's intent to interfere in the ongoing trial against former President Jair Bolsonaro and the revocation of visas for eight judges.

Following the application of precautionary measures against Bolsonaro, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the cancellation of the visas of Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court, and seven other members of that court and their immediate family members.

On July 9, in a letter sent to the Brazilian government announcing the 50 percent tariff on domestic products, Trump cited the lawsuit against Bolsonaro and criticized the Supreme Court.

In their letter condemning the US government’s actions, the former ministers emphasize that, during the trial for the alleged coup attempt, the defendants had the right to a “full defense and adversarial proceedings,” and state that revoking the visas of the higher court judges would constitute persecution and abusive intervention.

Recently, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva categorically rejected the Republican’s ultimatum, demanding an end to the legal proceedings against Bolsonaro, or else face the imposition of taxes.

During a speech at the opening of the National Union of Students Congress in Goiania, a municipality in the state of Goias (central-west), the former labor leader accused Trump of trying to blackmail Brazil.
