Panama promotes electrical interconnection project with Colombia

Panama City, July 22 (Prensa Latina) Panama's National Secretary of Energy, Juan Manuel Urriola, traveled to Colombia for a regional sector meeting, but with his focus on the electrical interconnection project between the two nations.

Urriola will then visit the Guna Yala region, as authorization from the indigenous peoples must be sought, which is key to this project, which includes an offshore section, originates in that territory, and then continues to the Panama substation.

The leaders of this indigenous ethnic group are requesting the development of infrastructure such as roads in exchange for permission to use their lands in the interconnection project with Colombia, according to the official quoted by the newspaper La Estrella de Panamá.

The expert specified that as soon as the region’s approval is obtained, the project will begin with supply and construction bidding processes that would last three years, from 2026 to 2029.

The estimated cost of the interconnection project is $800 million. It would have a total length of 500 kilometers: 220 in Panama, 150 in Colombia, and a 130-kilometer marine section.

The Colombia-Panama Interconnection is emerging as one of the most important projects for energy integration in Latin America, combining strategic vision with social impact.
