In Thailand and Cambodia border crisis death toll rises

Phnom Penh, July 26 (Prensa Latina) The Cambodian government reported the deaths of 13 citizens and more than 70 wounded as a result of fighting with Thailand in border areas that has continued for the third straight day.

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense reported that five Cambodian soldiers were killed and 21 others were wounded, in addition to the deaths of eight civilians and the injuries to 50 residents of Oddar Meanchey province.

After presenting these figures during a press conference, Maly Socheata, Undersecretary of State for the Cambodian Ministry of Defense and spokesperson, explained that the fighting forced more than 35,800 people on the Cambodian side to flee their homes.

On the other side, the reality is not much different: both countries share 800 kilometers of border, and Thai authorities have had to evacuate more than 100,000 people in several neighboring provinces.

The Thai government lamented the deaths of six of its soldiers and 13 civilians, including children, in addition to the injuries sustained by 29 soldiers and 30 civilians.

Regarding a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Cambodia’s ambassador to that international body, Chhea Keo, called for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

Cambodia referred the dispute to the International Court of Justice in early June, justifying the action as an attempt to provide a peaceful solution based on international law, while Bangkok advocated for a bilateral agreement.
