Maldives marks 60th independence anniversary

Male, Jul 26 (Prensa Latina) The Maldives celebrates on Saturday the 60th anniversary of its independence from British colonialism, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a special guest.

Local media informed that the festivities began in the morning with a flag-raising ceremony at Republic Square in this capital.

President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, cabinet ministers, and other senior officials attended the ceremony.

Later, a special prayer was recited to commemorate the significance of the occasion, and the ceremony concluded with a performance of the Maldivian national anthem by the Maldives National Defense Force military band.

Independence Day is celebrated annually on July 26, a date that commemorates the full liberation of the Maldives from British rule in 1965.
