Syria to hold parliamentary elections in September

Damascus, Jul 28 (Prensa Latina) The Supreme Committee for the Syrian People's Assembly Elections announced on Monday that the country will hold parliamentary elections between September 15 and 20.

This is the first electoral process since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024.

Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, chairman of the organization, informed official media that the process will proceed to select new members of the national legislature.

Al-Ahmad noted that the new People’s Assembly will have 210 seats, up from the previous 150. It is expected that at least 20 percent of the members of the electoral bodies will be women, as a sign of the commitment to greater female participation in the country’s political life.

The committee spokesperson also indicated that the representation of the governorates will be adjusted to the 2011 population census, while interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa will have the authority to appoint directly 70 of the parliamentarians, within the framework of the transitional provisions.

During a meeting with the Supreme Electoral Committee’s members, President Al-Sharaa stressed the importance of excluding from the process anyone linked to criminal groups or who promotes sectarian or religious division, to preserve national unity.
