Despite the Declaration of Principles signed on July 19 with the DRC government, the armed group continued to conquer towns in North Kivu, taking control of Ngululu and Ndete on Monday night, in the first Nyamaboko group.
Last week, the AFC/M23 also occupied Mulema, after intense fighting with local militias known as Wazalendo.
According to Actualite.CD, residents of Ngululu and Ndete had already abandoned their homes before the rebels’ arrival, some of whom fled to the Waloa Yungu group in Walikale territory, while others fled into the forest.
Implementation of the confidence-building measures provided for in the Declaration of Principles was to begin this Tuesday, but the AFC/M23 maintained that they would not return to the dialogue table with the government in Doha, Qatar, scheduled for August 8, until the prisoners were released.
The ceasefire agreed upon as part of the signed document has also not been implemented, as both parties have violated its provisions.
