South Korea: Protests against U.S. plan if accepted

Seoul, Jul 30 (Prensa Latina) South Korean beef producers threatened to organize a large-scale protest against the government if it accepts the conditions imposed by the United States in the current trade negotiations.

The South Korean Hanwoo Association, which represents some 80,000 local cattle farmers, issued a statement expressing its firm opposition to Washington’s demands that Seoul expand imports of U.S. beef.

As part of the ongoing talks, the Trump Administration is demanding that the South Korean side lift the ban on imports of U.S. beef cattle older than 30 months.

We strongly oppose the importation of U.S. beef from cattle older than 30 months. The government should immediately stop its submissive negotiations, the association stessed at a press conference held in front of the U.S. Embassy here.

Allegedly, President Donald Trump’s administration is pressuring South Korea to ease restrictions on U.S. beef and increase rice imports as part of broader trade negotiations.
