UN calls for guaranteed humanitarian access to Gaza

United Nations, August 1 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) reiterated its call to guarantee aid teams access to Gaza, currently plunged into a serious humanitarian crisis due to the Israeli occupation.

In a post on its website, the UN reiterated the need to allow urgent and continued delivery of food, medical supplies, and fuel to the civilian population, victims of violence, attacks, hunger, and disease.

It also confirmed that its personnel will continue to make the necessary efforts to reach local residents.

Without fuel, many basic facilities cannot function, from water treatment plants to the remaining medical infrastructure.

Residents, now on the brink of starvation, are forced to take desperate measures in search of food, humanitarian worker Olga Cherevko said.

For its part, the UN Children’s Fund warned that many mothers cannot breastfeed their babies because they are not eating enough and are being given ground chickpeas, bread, and rice, foods that are not suitable for infants.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization emphasized the importance of a continuous flow of medical supplies.

Cherevko noted that Israel’s “tactical pauses” are not sufficient and indicated that “hundreds of thousands of liters of fuel are required every day to effectively provide power, water, sanitation, healthcare, emergency telecommunications, and other critical facilities.”

We continue to see casualties among those seeking aid and more deaths from hunger and malnutrition. Pauses alone do not allow for the continuous flow of supplies needed to meet Gaza’s immense needs, she added.

According to the territory’s Ministry of Health, since October 7, 2023, at least 60,138 Palestinians have been killed and 146,269 injured by Israeli forces.
