During a ceremony held at Hiroshima Peace Park, Ishiba asserted that the event brought terrible days for the survivors; however, he omitted the perpetrator of the tragedy that claimed more than 100,000 lives.
Ambassadors and representatives from 120 countries and regions attended the ceremony alongside Japanese authorities and city residents.
A minute’s silence was observed at 08:15 hours (Hiroshima time), the exact moment when the atomic bomb known as “Little Boy” was dropped by the US warplane Enola Gay.
The US decision to drop atomic bombs on the civilian populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, has been questioned by many historians for years.
The massacre undoubtedly determined Japan’s unconditional surrender, but the human cost is still being paid at present.
Approximately 66,000 people lost their lives in Hiroshima at the time of the explosion on August 6, 1945. While in Nagasaki, three days later, the number approached 70,000.
