Within the framework of the upcoming XVI Regional Women’s Conference, the entity issued a call to public servants and legislators to enforce gender equality in practice.
The head, Citlalli Hernandez Mora, emphasized that authorities must guarantee this right and adhere to the principles of non-discrimination, as stipulated in the General Law for Equality between Women and Men, amended by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The call comes after a federal deputy justified attacks against women with the argument that “maybe they’re just loud,” which led to a public apology.
The Secretariat recalled that current law criminalizes political violence based on gender and requires public officials to avoid discriminatory practices.
It also noted that “language constructs realities and legitimizes violence,” noting that such comments undermine the constitutional mandate of equality.
At the end of its appeal, the Secretariat for Women reiterated the government’s commitment to the Fourth Transformation to eradicate misogyny in positions of power, on the eve of the international conference that will bring together regional leaders in the Mexican capital.
