About 2,600 people, including representatives from more than 90 countries, attended the commemoration ceremony in Nagasaki’s Peace Park, where Mayor Shiro Suzuki and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba spoke.
At 11:02 a.m., the exact time the plutonium bomb exploded over Nagasaki, they observed a minute of silence while a bell rang.
Following Suzuki’s speech, whose parents survived the attack, dozens of doves were released, as a symbol of peace.
According to the mayor, the city’s memories of the bombing are a common heritage and must be passed on from generation to generation inside and outside Japan.
The existential crisis of humanity has become imminent for each and every one of us on Earth.
‘To make Nagasaki the last site of an atomic bombing now and forever, we will join forces with the citizens of the world and devote our utmost efforts to the abolition of nuclear weapons and the achievement of a lasting world peace, said Suzuki.
