News agenda in DR focuses on promulgation of penal code

Santo Domingo, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) The promulgation by Dominican President Luis Abinader of the new Penal Code, which replaces the legislation in place since 1884, hit the news agenda for the week that ends on Saturday.

After decades of failed attempts, the document updates the century-old legislation and is essential for protecting people’s rights and the effective prosecution of crimes, according to the official version.

Among its advances, the Presidency highlighted the inclusion of more than 70 new crimes such as femicide, hired killing, economic violence, pyramid scheme, genocide, unregulated financial intermediation, and instigation of suicide.

It also increases prison sentences to 40 years and even 60 years for serious violations, establishes sanctions for legal entities for negligence or acts of their representatives, and provides more secure protection orders for victims of gender-based and domestic violence.

The official statement indicates that the new law strengthens the fight against administrative corruption by extending statutes of limitations, toughening sanctions, and disqualifying those responsible from holding public office.

The Communist Labor Party, the Caamañista Movement, the Dominican Popular Movement, Homeland for All, the Revolutionary Force, and the Leader of the Dominican Left believed that the law reinforces impunity for corruption and other crimes.
