Israel’s former generals decry Netanyahu’s plan to reoccupy Gaza

Tel Aviv, Aug 10 (Prensa Latina) Two former Israeli generals criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to reoccupy Gaza Strip, warning of its political, economic, and military consequences.

Although there is already talk of an end to the conflict, the five conditions imposed by the government to stop the conflagration actually only mean eternal war, Amos Yadlin, former director of Military Intelligence, questioned.

In an opinion piece published on Channel 12’s website, Yadlin criticized the “obedient and submissive” stance of the security cabinet, which accepted the right-wing politician’s proposal despite the army’s opposition.

This decision perpetuates the war, leads to the deaths of Israeli prisoners at the hands of Palestinian militias, leads to a military regime, and to the “economic and military enslavement of the Strip,” he warned.

In the same news outlet, retired Israeli General Yisrael Ziv, former head of the Armed Forces Operations Division, warned that the plan lacks a clear strategic vision.

“What we saw at the cabinet session (last Thursday) was a state of political isolation and desperation, as the government imposed on the Chief of Staff (Eyal Zamir) a plan that the Army does not consider viable and pushes the military establishment toward a deeper and more dangerous intervention,” he stressed.

“It’s madness to repeat the same thing over and over again and expect different results,” Ziv stated.

“What can the occupation of Gaza contribute now, other than deepening the failure and increasing the human and military cost?” he asked.
