A statement released on the official website of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers indicates that in that conversation, held yesterday, Meloni expressed to Abbas her “deep concern over recent Israeli decisions” aimed at “a further military escalation,” referring to a possible invasion of Gaza.
She also described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “unjustifiable and unacceptable,” a consequence of Tel Aviv’s continued bombing, which has already caused the deaths of more than 60,000 Palestinians.
The head of government expressed the “need to immediately cease hostilities to continue providing humanitarian assistance to a desperate civilian population” and reiterated her country’s commitment to humanitarian aid through the Food for Gaza initiative.
She referred to the recent airdrops of aid that began last Saturday and will continue this week, as well as the evacuation to date of more than 150 sick or injured Palestinian children.
She also announced the imminent arrival in Italy of a larger number of children to provide them with medical care.
According to the document, Meloni and Abbas agreed that “Hamas must release all hostages and accept that it will have no future in the government of the Gaza Strip.”
For his part, the Palestinian president expressed his “sincere gratitude for Italy’s fundamental role in the humanitarian aid provided to date and for the positions taken.”
