This statement is the last opportunity to challenge the charges before the trial, which has not yet been scheduled. It is expected to be held at the Supreme Federal Court in September.
The investigating judge, Alexandre de Moraes, is also expected to open the criminal case once he has received all the defense attorneys. The date will be set by the president of the First Chamber, Justice Cristiano Zanin. Justices Flavio Dino, Carmen Lucia Antunes, and Luiz Fux also make up the panel.
The case, which is being processed in the so-called crucial core of the indictment filed by the Attorney General’s Office, involves crimes such as armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the rule of law, coup d’etat, aggravated damages, and damage to historical heritage.
The defendants include, in addition to Bolsonaro, the former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency, Federal Representative Alexandre Ramagem, former Navy Commander Almir Garnier, former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres, and former Minister of the Office of Institutional Security, General Augusto Heleno.
Also accused are former Minister of Defense and General Paulo Sergio Nogueira, former Minister of Defense General Walter Braga Netto, and the former aide-de-camp to the former president, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, who pleaded guilty and was the first to present his pleas on July 30.
