Convoy with life-saving assistance arrives to Sweida province

Damascus, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) A new 11-truck humanitarian aid convoy headed for the southern Syrian governorate of Sweida today, Syrian Red Crescent (SRC) sources cited by SANA confirmed.

The caravan, loaded with food and basic necessities, crossed the Namir bridge in neighbouring Deraa province to reach the worst affected areas of Sweida. Their transfer was carried out under the supervision of the (SRC), in coordination with state and local agencies.

According to the organization, the assistance covers part of the most urgent needs of the population, although it is still insufficient in view of the humanitarian deterioration facing the territory.

Red Crescent press chief Omar Al-Maliki recently warned that the needs of the governorate cannot be delayed, particularly those related to food, water and health care.

In recent weeks, Sweida has experienced a serious deterioration of the humanitarian situation as a result of armed clashes between local tribes and factions, government intervention and Israeli bombing.

These events led to shortages of flour, fuel and food, as well as the partial collapse of the National Hospital due to damage to facilities and lack of medical supplies.

Following the relative calm of recent days, the Syrian authorities, in coordination with the Red Crescent and international agencies, sent aid convoys to alleviate the crisis.

Shipments included flour, foodstuffs, medicines and fuel to maintain basic services.
