Panama City closes July with high levels of violence

Panama City, August 17 (Prensa Latina) July became the most violent month in the Panamanian capital, with 59 homicides, according to a report from the Public Prosecutor's Office, cited by the TVN news channel.

According to the prosecutor’s report, of the 333 victims between January 1 and July 31, the other most turbulent months in this indicator were May, with 54 cases; and the first month of 2025, with 51 cases.

By territory, the province of Panama accounts for the largest number with 140 victims (42 percent); followed by the Caribbean province of Colón, and the capital’s district of San Miguelito.

With fewer cases but still significant figures go Panama Oeste, Cocle, Chiriqui, Veraguas, Darien, Bocas del Toro, Herrera, and Los Santos. However, the indigenous communities of Embera, Ngabe Bugle, and Guna Yala did not report any victims during the period, the statistics show.

Although the national total fell five percent equal to the same period in 2024 (from 349 to 333), there are regions with worrying increases, such as San Miguelito, in this capital, which rose 21 percent (from 52 to 63), and the province of Panama with an increased from 131 to 140 cases.

The main victims of violence in Panama continue to be men with 310 (93 percent) and 20 women (six cases), the institution stated.

Statistics from the Public Prosecutor’s Office also show that nine out of ten homicides involved a firearm, while the rest involved knives, mechanical asphyxiation, and blunt objects.
