Colombia hosts Amazonian Countries Summit

Bogota, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) The Amazonian Countries Summit opens in this capital on Monday, aimed at reaching agreements that will be taken as a common position for the World Conference on Climate Change, to be held in November in Brazil.

Representatives from the governments of Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela will meet from this Monday to Friday, along with authorities from the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, representatives of local and Afro-descendant communities, leaders of civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.

The meeting seeks to reach a consensus on a joint declaration that consolidates regional agreements, reflects shared priorities, and guides concrete actions to address the climate, environmental, economic, security, and social challenges facing the Amazon, the Colombian Foreign Ministry informed.

Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio emphasized that the region must act together, as the future of the region and the planet depends on what is done in the present.

The presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro, as well as the foreign ministers and/or ministers of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, have confirmed their presence at the event.

The meeting also goes on with a process that began with the 2023 Belem Declaration, where 113 goals were established to preserve the Amazon and reduce inequalities, and has been reinforced by the Paramaribo and Brasilia Declarations.
