According to its latest report entitled “The Painful Balance”, the entity provides a detailed analysis of the humanitarian catastrophe that hits the Palestinian refugee community in Syria, whose camps have been turned into scenes of bombing, fighting and forced disappearances.
The report noted that the number of missing Palestinians amounted to 5,370, with no information so far on their whereabouts.
The Yarmouk camp in Damascus has the highest number of casualties, with 1,596 Palestinians killed, including 194 women.
The text warns that the figures do not reflect the full scale of the tragedy, due to difficulties in documenting cases and families’ fear of disclosing information.
In conclusion, the Action Group called for the establishment of an independent international mechanism to investigate the whereabouts of missing persons and to hold them accountable for human rights violations.
It also called on UNRWA to expand its psychological and legal assistance programmes for the victims’ families.
According to the entity, more than 120,000 Palestinian refugees left Syria and headed for Europe while about 65,000 fled to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkiye, Sudan, Egypt and the Gaza Strip.
