Guatemala port resumes operations after a 2-day blockade

Guatemala City, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) The port of Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala's second largest port, located in the northeastern department of Izabal, resumed operations after a couple of days of blockade, an official source confirmed.

The days were tough (starting Monday afternoon and evening), with long talks with groups of workers, not just unions but also representatives from different areas, and we reached lines for improvement, described the president of the entity’s Board of Directors, Jose de la Pena.

In a press conference, the official emphasized that they agreed to create a dialogue table, also a working group, to present the arguments of both parties and, ultimately, jointly eliminate the problem.

This committee was established and will begin work next week, and we will hold the first session to set dates, during which everyone will discuss all the elements, the official emphasized in a videoconference with the press gathered at the government headquarters.

According to the analysis, the parties are seeking to negotiate a new collective agreement, given that the workdays are not in line with reality, nor is the way the situation is being handled.

Users and representatives of the Guatemalan Exporters Association estimated losses of almost $25 million due to the suspension and reiterated the call to seek fundamental solutions to the current crisis.

This blockade deprived the nation of approximately 40 million quetzales (just over $5 million) in taxes due to the lack of imports of goods, in addition to affecting the facilitation of global trade, competitiveness, and the confidence of investors, both domestic and foreign.
