Malaysia proposes sending more observers to Thai-Cambodian border

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim proposed on Thursday deploying additional observers to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, agreed in this capital on July 28.

Anwar Ibrahim emphasized during a forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that the proposal aims to ensure continued security and stability in the region and does not amount to interference.

The prime minister stated that the current number of ASEAN Interim Observer Team (IOT) members requires a more balanced distribution of resources between the two neighboring countries, as there are 10 members in Bangkok, but only two in Phnom Penh.

Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai rejected the proposal to send more international observers to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire on his country’s border with Cambodia.

The dispute between the two nations combines unresolved historical elements, as the Thailand-Cambodia border was mapped by France in 1907, during the colonial era, but still has several undemarcated points, which have led to clashes over the years.
