The government stated that it instructed the Armed Forces to offer NATO the opportunity to open a logistics headquarters there.
This country has been a member of the warring alliance since March 2024, arguing that its presence in the country “strengthens its security and deterrence capacity.”
Russia, for its part, denounced the warring bloc’s eastward expansion, which it considers a direct threat to its national security.
“This center supports the defense of NATO’s northern flank,” Defense Minister Pal Jonson said in a statement.
According to the government, the logistics base would have approximately 70 personnel in peacetime.
The army was tasked with preparing everything necessary for the base to be “operational by the end of 2027.”
Jonson told public radio SVT that the center’s operations “would involve the transport of various supplies such as fuel, ammunition, and spare parts.”
“The goal is to be able to transport large quantities of equipment and personnel within Swedish territory,” he added.
The Nordic country ended two centuries of military non-alignment and applied to join NATO after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, becoming its 32nd member in 2024.
