Truck convoy carrying humanitarian aid attacked in Sudan

Khartoum, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) A World Food Programme (WFP) truck convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Sudan's western Darfur region was attacked, and some of the vehicles were destroyed, it was reported here.

In conflicting versions, both sides in the conflict are accusing each other of the incident amid fierce clashes in the region.

According to information provided by WFP officials, the convoy of 16 trucks was heading the day before to the town of Mellit, in North Darfur, which is suffering severe shortages and famine as a result of the armed clashes. Meanwhile, United Nations spokespersons in Sudan reported that information is being gathered and stressed the enormous risks involved in sending aid, despite the fact that the population of the African country is suffering the worst humanitarian catastrophe on the planet.

Mellit is controlled by paramilitary forces and is located near the strategic town of Al Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese Armed Forces in Darfur, which is resisting a heavy siege by the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Some sources reported that the bombing killed dozens of people, also hitting Mellit’s main market and the Customs Authority offices.
