Ecuador’s Constitutional Court reviews lawsuits vs. Solidarity Law

Quito, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador's Constitutional Court reviews on Monday lawsuits against the National Solidarity Law, promoted by President Daniel Noboa and partially suspended by the court.

The session will be held online. However, the United Workers’ Front (FUT) called for staging a sit-in outside the constitutional institution to reject the legislation.

Both those who filed the challenges and the defendants, in this case representatives of the National Assembly (Parliament) and the Presidency, will have the right to speak during the hearing.

The challengers include the Regional Foundation for Human Rights Advice (INREDH), the Unidad Popular (Popular Unity) party, the Pichincha Bar Association, and attorney Erick Gavilanez.

Once both sides have been heard, the court may allow the intervention of those who filed amicus briefs, that is, contributions from third parties who, without being part of the proceedings, offer technical or legal criteria to enrich the debate.

The Court suspended early this month several articles of that provision and two other laws of interest to the Executive as a preventive measure to avoid serious damage before a final ruling on their constitutionality.
