Sponsored by the Electric Union (UNE), the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the International Cooperation Agency of Japan (JICA), the project for the Improvement of Electrical Power Supply has recently started its second phase here, the Japanese entity announced in a press release.

Since its opening in 2019, the cooperation program between the parties has had a total amount of 2,390 million Japanese yen (approx. $16.6 million, current rate), JICA said.

As part of the recently undertaken phase in this territory, seven new internal combustion generators were incorporated and an equipment was installed that will allow the start-up of generating units when the electrical system in the municipality collapses, either due to a breakdown or due to the passage of a cyclone.

A 10 Megawatt (MW) battery system, the energy control and management system and power conditioning were also installed to increase the quota of renewable energy in total electricity generation on the island, Thus contributing to the stabilization of electricity supply in the southern territory, he detailed the communication.

Municipal authorities and the Japanese side highlighted in the ceremony the high level of bilateral relations and existing solidarity between both peoples that is evident in this energy area, where other projects are expected to be implemented, said the representative of the JICA Office in Cuba, Ashida Tatsuya.

The Cuban government is developing the Energy Transition Strategy that aims to increase the share of renewable energies in national electricity generation by 24 percent by 2030 in line with its commitments on Sustainable Development Goals, says the note.

At the same time, JICA and UNE will continue to promote the training of Cuban technicians in the energy sector, including specialists from the Island of Youth, said the Japanese entity.
