Merz made these statements during a joint press conference with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the federal capital.
The German Chancellor emphasized that Berlin will not join the initiative promoted by several European nations to recognize Palestine as a state.
“We maintain that the conditions for recognition are not met in any way,” he stated.
The conservative leader added that recent events have not changed his administration’s official position on this issue.
He confirmed that he will maintain this position during the next session of the UN General Assembly.
This stance isolates Germany from key partners such as France and the United Kingdom, which have expressed their intention to recognize Palestinian statehood.
