India and WFP strengthen alliance against food insecurity

New Delhi, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) India and the World Food Program (WFP) signed a letter of intent to allow the international agency to distribute fortified rice from the South Asian nation to countries in crisis, official sources stated on Tuesday.

The initiative will contribute to meeting the food and nutritional needs of the most vulnerable populations in crisis regions worldwide, a statement from the WFP’s Indian branch underscored.

The release states that this is a significant milestone in the collaboration between New Delhi and the WFP to address the global hunger crisis and underscores the strength of global partnerships.

The WFP noted that it will use the resources of a country with agricultural surpluses to provide lifesaving aid and make tangible progress in the fight against hunger.

Sanjeev Chopra, an official from India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, affirmed that his country is committed to the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the Earth is one family), the concept that all individuals are collectively responsible towards each other and their shared future.

WFP’s Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau expressed his gratitude to New Delhi for its commitment to promoting a world with food security and peace.
