Guatemala expresses concern over the situation in Gaza Strip

Guatemala City, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Guatemala expressed deep concern over the situation in Gaza Strip, where Israeli tanks are moving forward in the destruction of homes and forcing civilians to flee.

In a statement, the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINEX) recognized the legitimate right of all peoples to live in security and peace, while underscoring the obligation of States to respect international law.

The protection of the civilian population, the release of all hostages, and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid are demands that we reiterate to all parties to the conflict, the MINEX emphasized.

Guatemala urgently called on those involved to establish an immediate ceasefire and reaffirmed its willingness to support initiatives aimed at establishing peace.

Three days ago, protesters in Antigua Guatemala, nearly 40 kilometers from this capital, condemned Israel’s genocide against Palestine and demanded an end to its illegal presence in that territory.

The Gaza Ministry of Health reports more than 62,000 Palestinian deaths since the start of the conflict in October 2023, along with a massive wave of displacement and a severe malnutrition crisis, according to reports.

The food crisis in that area has reached critical levels: 244,000 people are in phase 5 (humanitarian catastrophe), and 93 percent of the population lives in at least phase 3 (food crisis), according to reports.
