Syria: Tens of thousands of people remain missing

Damascus, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that more than 181,000 people remain detained or forcibly disappeared in the country since 2011.

According to the Network’s fourteenth annual report, presented on the International Day in Support of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, between March 2011 and August 2025, 181,312 disappearances were recorded, including 5,332 children and 9,201 women.

The document specified that most of the detainees were victims of enforced disappearance shortly after their arrest, showing a systematic and planned practice.

Currently, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, at least 177,057 people remain missing, including 4,536 children and 8,984 women.

The entity noted that it has documented arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances for more than 14 years, relying on field sources and cooperating with the United Nations and other international organizations to ensure the accuracy of its reports.

The organization emphasized that enforced disappearances constitute one of the greatest humanitarian and human rights challenges since 2011, with devastating effects that extend for years and require long-term, sustained solutions.
