Jordan welcomes Belgium’s decision to recognize the Palestinian State

Amman, Sept 2 (Prensa Latina) The Kingdom of Jordan welcomed Belgium's announcement of its intention to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the next session of the UN General Assembly, scheduled for this month in New York.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot’s decision as a “significant step” in support of international efforts to achieve recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967, borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Fuad Majali stated that this is a crucial measure in the face of attempts to deny the Palestinian people their legitimate right to self-determination and the building of an independent state on their own territory.

Majali also stressed the importance of the international conference sponsored by Saudi Arabia and France, which will take place during the General Assembly and will focus on promoting a two-state solution.

He said Jordan will continue working with its Arab and international partners to consolidate the independence, freedom, and justice of the Palestinian people, convinced that this formula represents the only viable path to a just and lasting peace in the region.

The Belgian Foreign Minister had stated that Belgium will formally recognize the Palestinian state during the UN session this month; and explained that the decision was taken in light of the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza, where Israeli offensives have displaced most of the population and the UN has declared a famine.

The diplomat added that the objective is not to punish the Israeli people, but to ensure respect for international and humanitarian law, as well as to bring about concrete changes on the ground.
