African body mourns deaths from natural disaster in Sudan

Djibouti, Sept 3 (Prensa Latina) The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, expressed his condolences to the families and communities affected by a landslide in Sudan, which resulted in a death toll of one thousand.

In a statement, Gebeyehu reaffirmed IGAD’s solidarity with Khartoum in this moment of profound grief and underscored the urgent need for peace, unity, and resilience.

He also highlighted the importance of providing timely humanitarian assistance to those most in need.

The natural disaster that happened on August 31 in the city of Tarasin, North Darfur state, also destroyed an entire village in the Marra Mountains.

The tragedy occurred at a time when the Sudanese people are facing enormous difficulties as a result of the ongoing conflict since April 2023, which has caused severe losses of lives and livelihoods, the statement emphasized.
