Myanmar reinforces actions against human trafficking

Naipyido, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Myanmar Home Minister Tun Tun Naung announced new measures to tackle human trafficking, including a pilot project targeting online fraud, forced labor and sham marriages.

At the first meeting of the Central Anti-Trafficking Committee, which he chairs, he explained that four working committees and task forces were set up at different levels as part of a nationwide effort.

The authorities detected practices such as arranged marriages between foreigners and Burmese, promoted for fraudulent purposes, as well as deception through language schools opened by foreigners with tourist visas.

Tun Tun Naung warned about the use of social networks such as Facebook, TikTok and Telegram to recruit victims through fake advertisements, and urged to strengthen intelligence gathering, prevention and law enforcement.

The pilot plan calls for intensifying international cooperation, facilitating the repatriation of victims and developing educational campaigns, as well as strengthening surveillance in border areas.

At the meeting, participants discussed proposals to improve coordination and the Minister closed the session with a call to join efforts against transnational crime.
